      What is Upper Blepharoplasty?

Upper Eyelid Blepharoplasty (often referred to as an "Upper Bleph") is an in-office procedure that surgically removes excess, drooping eyelid skin which commonly develops as part of the aging process. Post-procedure, the eyes maintain their natural shape but look more open. The result is that you look more refreshed, alert and youthful.

      Why we love it

The area around the eyes is immediately rejuvenated with an upper bleph, and the effect can make the whole face appear revitalized. This procedure is a great option for those who want fast, visible, natural-looking results with minimal downtime. Patients are often surprised to find that the surgery is a lot less intimidating + a lot more comfortable than they initially expected. Overall, they tend to be very pleased with the process and their outcomes.

      What to Expect

Before scheduling an upper blepharoplasty, each patient is evaluated during a consultation to ensure they’re a good candidate. The procedure itself is performed in-office under local anesthesia with Valium to take the edge off, and takes approximately 60-75 minutes from incision to closing.

Patients should expect mild bruising or swelling for about 2 weeks, and they should plan to avoid strenuous activities for 10 days, but they can get back to most aspects of their daily routine almost immediately and most report minimal discomfort.

Results are visible right away and the scar is hidden in the eye’s natural crease, making signs of surgery hard to detect.

      FAQs

      • Does upper eyelid surgery hurt?

This procedure is very well tolerated. Patients are given Valium and the area is treated with a local anesthetic prior to surgery. With these measures, our patients have reported little to no pain during the procedure itself. For 1 – 2 days after surgery, patients may experience swelling in the treated area, but they describe the swelling as somewhat uncomfortable rather than painful.

      • Can I get an upper bleph if I have dry eyes or if I have had Lasik?

We do not recommend upper bleph surgery for patients with dry eyes because the procedure can worsen the condition.

Patients who have had Lasik are advised to wait at least a year before getting upper bleph surgery to help minimize the risk of developing dry eyes.

      • What should I do to prepare for my upper bleph procedure?

Avoid alcohol for 3 days prior to your treatment to help reduce bruising. If possible, avoid blood thinners, aspirin and NSAIDs (e.g. - Advil, Motrin, Aleve), vitamin E and fish oils for one week before, consulting with your physician before altering any prescription regimen.

Arnica or bromelain supplements can be used 2-3 days prior to your procedure to reduce the likelihood of bruising and swelling.

Do not wear contact lenses to your procedure.

Be sure to arrange for someone to take you home after your surgery. You will not be allowed to drive or leave alone.

      • What should I do and expect post-surgery?

Within a day of the surgery, you can return to most daily activities including washing your face and showering. Eye makeup and taxing activities (e.g. – exercising, participating in sports, gardening, etc.) should be avoided for 10 days.

You should expect most bruising and/or swelling to abate within 2 weeks but residual signs of bruising can linger. You’ll see results immediately after your procedure but should allow 6 – 8 weeks to assess your final outcome for this reason.

      • Do you perform lower blepharoplasties at Radiance Rx?

Lower blepharoplasties require general anesthesia and therefore are not offered at Radiance Rx.
