      What are Dermal Fillers?

Over time, collagen regeneration slows, facial fat pads shift and bone loss progresses. These changes cause loss of volume and definition, leading to an aged appearance. To maintain a more youthful look, dermal fillers can be used to “fill in” targeted areas of the face with a gel-like form of hyaluronic acid. Artfully placed, filler work to smooth lines, add volume, sculpt features, enhance definition and more. If you are looking for dermal filler service near Raleigh North Carolina, contact Radiance Rx today.  We are a premier Dermal Filler location for volumizing, plumping and smoothing treatments that will last up to 18 months.

      What they treat

With quick results that typically last 12-18 months, and minimal downtime, this treatment is a patient and provider favorite. Some of the most popular uses include:

      • Volumizing cheeks
      • Plumping lips
      • Smoothing nasolabial folds (smile lines)
      • Brightening under eyes (tear trough)
      • Filling vertical lip lines
      • Softening marionette lines
      • Defining the jawline

      Why we love them

Most dermal fillers are made of Hyaluronic Acid (HA), a substance that’s naturally occurring in skin and that can be found in many moisturizers. The main function of HA is to retain water and keep tissue well hydrated, so fillers utilizing Hyaluronic Acid can give skin a more plump, naturally refreshed look. All this and they’re minimally invasive with little downtime. Plus, you’ll see preliminary results right away.

      What to Expect

Your provider will assess the best approach to attain your desired results and will determine the filler(s) to use, placement areas and technique(s) based on your unique needs.

Your skin will be cleansed and prepared, and then the injections will begin. Pinching at the injection sites and feeling slight pressure as the product is delivered is normal, and most patients find the treatment to be very tolerable. Many fillers contain a numbing agent, so you’ll feel even less as the procedure progresses. More sensitive areas, like the lips, will be numbed with a topical prior to your procedure.

You'll start to see results almost immediately, and can expect to see full results in about 2 weeks. With no downtime, you can resume most daily activities immediately after your appointment, keeping in mind that you may experience some redness, swelling or bruising.

      FAQs

      • Who's a good candidate for dermal fillers?

With the versatility to address so many areas and concerns, dermal fillers are a recommended treatment for many of our patients interested in a beauty-maintenance plan. Some patients use fillers to “turn back the clock”, and some use them to prevent lines and other signs of aging before they occur. Others utilize fillers to enhance certain features (like the lips, chin or jaw) or to bring more symmetry to their features.

Ideal candidates for dermal fillers are ones that are committed to maintaining a good skin care routine (which enhances the aesthetic benefits of filler), have realistic expectations (keep in mind, a 1ml syringe is only about 1/5th of a teaspoon of filler!), are in good overall health and do not smoke (both of which are important for healing).

Dermal fillers are not recommended for those that have a lidocaine allergy, an active infection or an autoimmune disorder. Avoid dermal filler if you are pregnant or nursing and consult your doctor if you are on an ACE inhibitor or on an ARB for hypertension.

Come in for a consultation with one of our injectors to determine if dermal fillers make sense for you. Call us at 919-303-4777 or request a consultation online.

      • What should I do to prepare for my filler treatment?

Avoid alcohol for 3 days prior to your treatment to help reduce bruising. If possible, avoid blood thinners, aspirin and NSAIDs (e.g. - Advil, Motrin, Aleve), vitamin E and fish oils for one week before, consulting with your physician before altering any prescription regimen.

Arnica or bromelain supplements can be used 2-3 days prior to your procedure to reduce the likelihood of bruising and swelling.

Don’t plan any dental work or vaccines for 2 weeks prior to or after treatment.

      • What should I do and expect post-treatment?

After your treatment, do not massage or press on the areas treated, and do not apply makeup or lip balm for at least 12 hours. Avoid vigorous exercise, hot tubs, saunas or other high-heat situations for 24 hours. Do not get facials and do not use a face cradle, such as in a massage table, for 1-2 weeks. In addition, avoid flying for 24 hours, do not get dental work or vaccine for 2 weeks, and try to avoid lying directly on the areas that were injected for two nights following your treatment.

The areas treated may feel tender right after treatment and you may wish to use cold packs to help reduce potential swelling. While slight discomfort is normal, you should immediately report if you are experiencing any severe pain or discoloration that does not seem consistent with a normal bruise in the affected area.

Do not get cosmetic treatments such as microdermabrasion or dermaplaning for at least 24 hours after your filler injection.

We care deeply about our patients and their satisfaction. Scheduling a timely follow up 2 weeks after this procedure is important as it allows us to assess results and ensure the best aesthetic outcome.

      • What's the downtime for filler treatments?

You can resume most daily activities immediately after your appointment, keeping in mind the post-treatment guidelines outlined above.

In case you experience redness or swelling, you can expect that to subside within in a couple of days. If you have bruising, that will resolve in 1 – 2 weeks.

      • Can I get filler the same day as a facial?

You can get filler immediately after a treatment such as a facial, microderm or dermaplane. However, you should not get a facial or use a face cradle (such as on a massage table) for at least one week post-filler.

      • How much filler do I need?

Every patient is different, so the specific filler(s) and the amounts used will be determined case-by-case with your provider. If you have had filler before, please keep in mind that our bodies continue to age, so you will likely need more filler to achieve similar results over time.

      • What other areas can be treated with dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are extremely versatile. In addition to the treatment areas listed above, they can be used for:

        • Sculpting the chin
        • Rejuvenating hands
        • Reducing neck wrinkles
        • Balancing facial features
        • Filling sunken temples
      • Can I get injectable treatments while pregnant or breastfeeding?

We do not perform injections on patients who are pregnant.

Getting injections while breastfeeding is a personal decision that you may wish to discuss with your primary care doctor. There is no evidence that getting toxin/filler while breastfeeding, will lead to birth defects.  Retrospective review shows that there is no evidence that shows toxin/filler goes through the breast milk.
