      What is Lip Blushing?

Lip blushing adds a hint of color to lips and can be used to improve their symmetry. This semi-permanent cosmetic tattoo procedure is a great way to enhance lips that have lost color, contour and/or fullness with age.

By depositing pigment into the lips using a special permanent makeup machine pen, your lip blushing artist will give you a look that can last up to 2 years and won’t smudge or wash off. That means you’re ready to go any time, and you can skip the ongoing hassle of applying and reapplying lip liner and gloss throughout the day.

      Why we love it

Lip blushing gives you a look that’s versatile, youthful, and subtle yet impactful. Enjoy your lip blushing as-is for a zero-effort everyday enhancement that looks completely natural, or add your favorite lipstick to dress up your look for a special occasion. If your preference is a more pronounced look, additional touchups can provide more saturated color.

      What to Expect

Lip blushing typically involves 3 visits – a consultation, the initial treatment and a touch up. Certain lip tones need to be neutralized for more even pigmentation and to achieve the desired color, and therefore require additional sessions.

Because lips are a sensitive area, treatment visits start with numbing. For the procedure, your provider will draw the planned outline of your lips and will then begin depositing the color selected during your consultation. Although numbed, patients should expect some discomfort.

Immediately after the procedure, lips will be swollen and tender, and the color will be very vibrant. As the lips heal, the color will settle to a soft blush. The resulting color may be uneven in places, and those areas are addressed during the touch up visit which is scheduled 6 weeks from the original treatment. While results can last up to 2 years, a refresh every 12-18 months is recommended to keep the color looking its best.

      FAQs

      • Is lip blushing painful?

Numbing cream is used to desensitize the lips for the procedure. Lips are naturally sensitive so you may still experience some discomfort but most patients tolerate the procedure very well.

      • How long does it take for lips to heal?

Healing after lip blushing lasts about 5-7 days but tends to be a relatively easy process for most to manage. During that time, you’ll be asked to apply balm regularly and avoid certain foods and activities.

Lips may be slightly swollen for the first day or two and may flake a few days after the procedure. Your color will start off very vibrant but will settle and soften to a natural tone by day 7.

      • How long does lip blushing last?

Lip blushing can last up to 2 years but a touch up every 12-18 months is recommended to keep the shape and color looking their best.

      • I have lip fillers. Can I still get lip blushing done?

Absolutely! Many of our clients have lip fillers and that does not preclude them from getting lip blushing. However, we recommend you allow at least 4 weeks from the time you get lip filler or neurotoxin around the lips to when you schedule your lip blushing procedure.

If considering both lip filler and lip blushing, we suggest getting the lip filler done first.

      • Can lip blushing be done on lips that are lined or wrinkled?

Lip blushing isn’t recommended for mature lips with heavy lines or wrinkles because the pigmentation can settle into crevices and accentuate the creases. If you’re not a good candidate for this or any other reason, we’ll be able to advise you as such during your consultation.

      • Will lip blushing conceal discoloration on the lips?

Lip blushing provides subtle color and will not cover up freckles, moles or other dark spots. The subtlety of the color also means it will not affect the color of applied lipstick.

      • Can I get lip blushing while pregnant?

We recommend avoiding lip blushing during pregnancy and while breastfeeding.

      • What should I do to prepare for my treatment or touch up?

Come to your consultation with a sample of your favorite lipstick, gloss or balm to help with the color selection process.

Prior to the actual treatment, keep your lips very gently exfoliated, healthy and hydrated as we can’t effectively perform the procedure on lips that are dry, flaking, or chapped.

To help limit swelling and bruising, avoid alcohol for 3 days prior to your treatment. If possible, avoid blood thinners, aspirin and NSAIDs (e.g. - Advil, Motrin, Aleve), vitamin E and fish oils for one week before, consulting with your physician before altering any prescription regimen.

Arnica or bromelain supplements can be used 2-3 days prior to your procedure to reduce the likelihood of bruising and swelling.

If you have a history of cold sores, you must take a 7-day cycle of cold sore medication starting 3 days before your procedure to limit the possibility of bruising, inflammation and breaking out.

Planning ahead, avoid neurotoxins/fillers in the lip area 4 weeks prior to the procedure, and deep exfoliation or chemical peel treatments within 2 weeks of treatment.

Do not schedule the procedure within 2 months of taking antibiotics as they may cause the body to reject the pigment being applied.

Do not exercise or use any lip products aside from balm the day of your procedure.

      • What should I do post-treatment or touch up?

After your lip blushing procedure, keep your lips dry of any fluid. (If too much lymph fluid, water or sweat accumulates on your lips, it could form a thick scab which can lead to uneven color results once healed.)

Apply a thin layer of ointment regularly as directed, but avoid applying makeup or lotions to the area for 10 days.

Gently wash your lips with mild soap twice daily.

Do not pick, scratch or use a washcloth on the tattooed area while healing.

If you experience swelling, apply an icepack with a sterile barrier, or take an ibuprofen.

Drink from a straw the first few days after your treatment, and avoid salty or spicy foods.

Avoid sweating and excessive exercise for 1 week, and do not use steam, sauna or swim for 10 days.

Stay out of the sun for 1 week.

Do not schedule any lip filler, go tanning or do any chemical treatments until your lips are completely healed.
